THE SYLLABUS

The Nigel James Elite Coaching programme offers a syllabus that adheres to the concepts and coaching requirements of the three phases of the EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan), which is implemented by professional clubs across the country.

Phase 1: Foundation Phase (7-12)
Based upon developing ball mastery skills. Ball mastery is the fundamental basis where professional capability on the ball is acquired. The programme is focussed on one student, one ball, and through a series of fundamental practical exercises, the beginner gradually masters the ability to control the ball to an elite standard and capability.

Phase 2: Youth Development Phase (12-16)
The coaching programme increases significantly in terms of the intensity of practice. Competitive matches become 11 v 11 played on age appropriate pitches. The phase is characterised by players learning to play in the team. Players will be coached to develop greater tactical awareness and understanding of the game without the focus of being to win at all costs.

Phase 3: Professional Development Phase (16-18)
There may initially be an increase in the intensity of training in this phase but also with the increasing focus and importance of knowing how to manage games. There will be more of a focus on the need to learn how to win but, importantly, with the continued need to develop the player technically and tactically.

If your child isn’t at a professional club, they need to be following the programme with Nigel James Elite Coaching so development is in line with academy requirements.

For those players currently in a professional environment, following the same programme with Nigel James will offer bespoke development for each individual to ensure they showcase themselves to the best of their ability to maintain progress within their club.

The programme – which gives boys and girls of all ages and abilities the opportunity and flexibility to study across all the three phases of elite football development – is delivered under the guidance of coaches who have worked in recognised Category 1 & 2 professional football academies, and who have the capability, experience and qualifications to deliver the programme to the same standard.

The Nigel James Elite Coaching Programme quickly identifies the appropriate level of coaching required for each player to attain the skills to progress and develop elite capability.

Should your child have the passion and ambition for the beautiful game, we accept motivated and committed individuals from the ages of 5-21.

Attendance is recommended at least twice a week in order to develop a player over a prolonged period of time, with coaching group sessions tailored to the individual development requirement of each student.

Luke Medley

Assistant Manager

Technical Development

Luke started his football career at Protec Football Academy, where he was picked up by Barnet. At 17, he signed for Tottenham Hotspur U18s before penning his first professional contract at the age of 18 with Bradford City, where he scored the winning goal with his first touch in senior football.

Luke then went on to play for Barnet, Aldershot, Mansfield Town, Lincoln City and Kidderminster Harriers before a long-term injury put his playing career on hold. This saw Luke embark on his coaching journey with Nigel James Elite Coaching back in 2012, where he was handed the platform to learn and develop his coaching skills.

Luke now specialises in technical development and has worked at academies such as Crystal Palace FC, Chelsea FC and Fulham FC Foundation. Currently in the last stages of the UEFA A license course, Luke has a great rapport with every single player at Nigel James Elite Coaching. He takes time to get to know each individual and thrives in bringing the best out of the players both on and off the pitch.
