As a youth player at age 14, Nigel started his career at Luton Town, moving to Southampton, Farnborough Town, Woking and lastly to Aldershot aged 19. A motorbike accident halted his playing career and out of this adversity came his true calling, coaching youth players to become future footballers.
Gwynn Berry was Nigel’s mentor and the man who instilled in him the passion for coaching. Through his guidance, Nigel realised that developing individual players was key and that not every player is the same – they all develop at different stages and there is no ‘one size fits all’ methodology.
Nigel’s own experience of playing at non-league level highlighted that this aggressive approach was not the place for some young players who needed mentoring according to their ability. The non-league had a ‘jump straight in with the adults’ mentality and some had no chance.
With this Nigel James Elite Coaching was established in 2002 to provide that stepping stone which grounds players and teaches them what to expect when they are entering academy football, crucial in a future player’s evolution into a bona fide footballer.
In addition to his immense talent as a coach, Nigel, who’s also been inspired by coached Jeff Chappell (Woking) and George Borg (Aldershot), has worked within the professional side of the game for 14 years as a talent ID scout initially for Fulham, Reading and Tottenham. Now Nigel’s ability is recognised throughout the industry other professional academies frequently seek his advice over players to sign both within the UK and abroad.
Nigel also has the experience of being a parent of a player striving for a pro contract. Eldest son Joshua was at Fulham from the age of 7-11 and at Reading from 11-16; second eldest Reece is a first-player at Chelsea FC and an England Under-21 international, while daughter Lauren played for both Chelsea, Arsenal and is now currently representing Manchester Unuted in the Women’s Super League and England at youth level.
As well as being a coach and parent, Nigel recently signed as an intermediary to be in a great position to act as an agent for players he has often worked and built a relationship of trust with over many years.
With over 20 years of clinical experience, Caroline is well positioned to support the academy with medical issues and take the lead on safeguarding to help ensure the safety of all young players in the academy.
As Nigel James Elite Coaching continues to expand, Caroline works closely alongside Nigel to support the operational side of the business, thereby allowing Nigel to focus on football development for players.
Joss began coaching due to his love of football and desire to be involved within the game. Whilst a player at Basingstoke’s academy, he got his FA level 1 & 2 coaching badges. During this time he realised coaching was his passion and that has now resulted in him completing a football coaching and performance degree at the University of Chichester.
He has worked as the head coach of Chichester College Academy and Nations United – a refugee team founded by the Sanctuary of Chichester. Additionally, Joss was part of the analysis team at non-league side Walton Casuals FC and has worked abroad in countries such as China on various international coaching projects.

As an experienced player, Baf held a contract with Welling United while they were in the Conference Premier Division but decided that his future lay in sports exercise and coaching to support elite players to achieve their full potential.
Alongside his studies at Brunel University, Baf has become an integral part of the Nigel James Elite Coaching team and honed his skills in strength and conditioning training alongside technical ball work, while managing the U11 and U12 NJEC teams.
Whilst an academy player at Crystal Palace FC, Ryan joined Nigel James Elite Coaching to further enhance his skills as a player, believing this to be the catalyst in helping him to gain his scholarship and first-year professional contract with Crystal Palace.
At the age of 19, having been released from Palace, Ryan decided to use his experience in the professional game to help support the development of other players and joined Nigel James as an academy coach in 2017. His philosophy that hard work shows a willingness to improve and unlock potential is testament to his own development and reflects the demands he places on the players he coaches.
Ryan currently plays non-league football and this, combined with his previous experience in the professional game, provides the knowledge and expectations required of a player to help them to realise their dreams.
For many years, Sam trained as a scholar of Nigel James Elite Coaching, recognising that in the modern game ball comfort and technical ability is imperative for any goalkeeper. Sam also played for Nigel’s U-18s team, winning league and cup trophies. Now working as a personal trainer, Sam continues his love for football by working with our U-18s goalkeepers.
All players attending the Nigel James Elite Coaching Programme will receive a Players Handbook and be given a full training kit.

Luke started his football career at Protec Football Academy, where he was picked up by Barnet. At 17, he signed for Tottenham Hotspur U18s before penning his first professional contract at the age of 18 with Bradford City, where he scored the winning goal with his first touch in senior football.
Luke then went on to play for Barnet, Aldershot, Mansfield Town, Lincoln City and Kidderminster Harriers before a long-term injury put his playing career on hold. This saw Luke embark on his coaching journey with Nigel James Elite Coaching back in 2012, where he was handed the platform to learn and develop his coaching skills.
Luke now specialises in technical development and has worked at academies such as Crystal Palace FC, Chelsea FC and Fulham FC Foundation. Currently in the last stages of the UEFA A license course, Luke has a great rapport with every single player at Nigel James Elite Coaching. He takes time to get to know each individual and thrives in bringing the best out of the players both on and off the pitch.
